Things your home does not need

 

Beautiful furniture and personal items transform the apartment into a home, you can read that on Sweet Home almost every day. And yet sometimes you just have too much or the wrong thing. There are things that no apartment needs or makes more beautiful, no matter how seductively they are advertised to us.

Bedding sets

Better mix patterns and colors, like here. This not only makes a bed more personal and life more varied, but it also makes everyday life easier. Because with the mix-and-match system, not everything comes to a standstill - just because buttons are missing on a cover or you have changed the sizes of the pillows.

Vases for all occasions

In most households, there are collections of all sorts of vases on or in cupboards waiting for exactly the bouquet that you will probably never get given as a present anyway. Flowers usually look nicer anyway when they are unpretentiously placed in jugs or champagne buckets. Vases are beautiful living objects. Keep the ones that you find top and decorative, display them as home accessories. And buy new ones too if you feel like it. Set up in groups and with a little green, strong vases look most beautiful. The noble gases in the picture are from the latest collection belonging to those that you want to have and show. But say goodbye to the strange specimens, the cloudy, glassy ones that have never been properly cleaned, the unloved inherited and gifted ones, and the really ugly ones!

Accumulated

I am anything but a minimalist and through my work, as a stylist, I am always on the lookout for pretty things that look good in photos. Things that somehow end up in my apartment. But sugar cones - unless you come from nice, fancy places like this one. Do not make a kitchen or interior photo more beautiful. Such collective goods also include extra buttons that we once cut from clothes that we no longer remember. Batteries, mail, coupons, chargers, and cables whose associated devices have been out of service for a long time also belong to this category, and yes, old handicrafts by children that have lost all their charm when they are dusty or sticky.

Furniture and things that get in the way

Have you stumbled across this somehow beautiful but never really used stool ten times? There are things that we laughed at and put in the apartment in much the same way that we bought this cute, floral dress and never put it on. There is only one thing: get rid of it or need it. The pretty country-style bench on which only newspapers are piled, the large glass vase with the dry twigs that never look as great with a lot of dust as the example from the living room magazine, or the chest of drawers that just never got the well-deserved paint job: you none of them make an apartment more beautiful and life in it not easier.

Obsolete

Thanks to the internet, we have not needed manuals for kitchen and household appliances in all four national languages ​​plus English and Dutch for a long time. If something no longer works, you can easily find instructions by entering the model on the respective manufacturer's pages, often even with a practical video. Sometimes, unfortunately, the design doesn't go along with it, as with my new oven, whose lighting failed after less than a year. Since I have no idea how to disconnect a built-in oven from the electricity and I suspect the relatively forcible use of screwdrivers in the dark, I have been baking without light for months.

Special cleaning agents

Since my kitchen fire a few years ago at the latest, I've known how to best clean, namely with hot water and a little washing-up liquid - little! This will make almost everything clean. For the other, cleaning vinegar and sometimes lemon helps. It is also better to use a soft cloth and a little salt to scrub. Dispose of everything else at the correct disposal point. Because you don't need a completely new product for every household appliance and every surface. That is neither sustainable nor environmentally friendly.

Ceiling lighting in every room

Pendant lights and spots on the ceiling do not provide the most atmospheric light unless they are hung low. When entering the apartment, it is good to turn on the light immediately with a switch next to the door, but you don't have to do that in the other rooms in. Union Complex provide you all facilities. So you don't have to install ceiling lighting everywhere, but can provide light at specific points, for example with floor and table lamps. The new pendant lights often look great - like vases or other decorative objects in the home - when they are hung in groups in a suitable place.

Dinnerware sets by the dozen

Anyone who is not called Kate or William and does not live in a castle and does not lead a stately social life with regular dinner invitations at home do not need the dishes by the dozen. It is better to alternate and combine unusual dishes with bowls and platters. Or rent an extra set if a lot of guests come to visit.

A house bar

A home bar is glamorous and a good idea. In the implementation, however, something like a gag or a phase that you go through. Cups for everything

I'm not a coffee drinker, we make tea. But of course, guests or craftsmen also get a cup of coffee. Just which cup? Espresso cups, cappuccino cups, or a large glass for a macchiato seem to me to be way too much choice for a drink - and with saucers, they also take up a lot of space in the kitchen cupboard. That's why I think it makes more sense to choose your own, personal type of mug that fits everything. It can be very stylish and personal to defy tradition when serving drinks and meals.

Everything according to the scheme

Symmetry can help bring visual order to the facility. But it must not be a dictation. You don't necessarily need two identical bedside tables with identical lights. Neither does just one type of chair around the table. Furnishing according to the scheme does not automatically make an apartment cozy.

Lanterns

I've already photographed many of these metal lanterns for furniture catalogs, and the buyers are obviously into them. But believe me, they are the most unnecessary home accessory for the apartment. They still make sense at a summer party in the garden, but indoors they are simply absurd. You burn your fingers if you touch them, they get too hot for a wooden floor, can be dangerous on a carpet or furniture - and usually, or almost always, the candle falls into the glass when you adjust it and makes it clink.
